General Information about Delos Island

Delos is located in the Aegean Sea in Greece, southwest of Mykonos and north of Paros and Naxos. With a length of about 4.6 km and a width of 1.2 km, the island is relatively small, so that the most interesting attractions can be easily visited on foot. In the center is the 133-meter-high Mount Kynthos, from the top of which you can enjoy a magnificent view. The history of Delos dates back to the Bronze Age, the 3rd millennium BC, with the island later becoming an important religious center in antiquity. It was considered the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis and was a sacred place for the worship of the two deities. Only 600 meters away is the island of Rinia, also known as “Great Delos”. At that time, it was the burial place of Delos, as no one was allowed to be born or buried on the sacred island.

Delos also became an important trading center in the eastern Mediterranean. Numerous temples and works of art adorned the island. In its heyday, Delos was a thriving trading center and slave market. It is estimated that 20,000 to 30,000 people lived on the island and 10,000 slaves were shipped daily. Despite its historical importance, Delos was badly destroyed during the Mithridatic War and later plundered repeatedly. Eventually, the island lost its importance and was abandoned. Today, Delos is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. During a visit, you will be amazed by the countless ruins of magnificent buildings, including parts of the Temple of Apollo, the Theater and the Gymnasium. Since 1990, Delos has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
