General Information on the Arena of Pula

The Pula Arena in Istria is an impressive Roman amphitheater, considered to be the sixth largest of its kind in antiquity. It is located in the heart of the port city of Pula, about 200 meters from the historic center, from where it can be easily explored on foot during a stroll through the city. The Pula Arena is over 2,000 years old and was completed in 81 AD. In particular, the façade made of white limestone is still very well-preserved. The historical amphitheater consists of two superimposed rows of arcades with 72 arches and an upper floor with 64 rectangular window niches. It is interesting to note that the arena facing the sea is an impressive 32.45 meters high, while the eastern side, situated on a hill, is much lower.

Today, the Arena of Pula can host up to 5,000 spectators, while in Roman times it could hold up to 26,000. However, the former stands were demolished in the Middle Ages. The ancient spectators were treated to bloody gladiator fights, animal fights and probably naval battles. Today, under the arena, there is a permanent exhibition of the Roman history of Istria. Especially during the summer months, the amphitheater in Pula is a popular venue for events. It is worth taking a look at the calendar of events, as operas, concerts, theater performances and the Pula Film Festival are regularly held here. Another highlight is the Spectacvla antiqva, where gladiatorial fights are re-enacted.
