General information about Trang
Trang is a province in the south of Thailand and is located on the west coast off the Malaysian border. It is about 830 kilometers from Bangkok to Trang, so the easiest way to reach this region is by domestic flight. Compared to other regions of Thailand, Trang is still relatively free of tourism and therefore still a secret tip! On a coastline of 200 kilometers and on about 46 islands, you can still expect a lot of untouched nature, which is protected by a total of 3 different national parks and by ecotourism. The city of Trang is located about 20 kilometers inland from the coast and the best way to reach all the Andaman Islands is from the ferry port Pak Meng Pier.
The journey by long-tail boat or ferry to the Trang archipelago is also a unique experience. During a fast ride, you will enjoy an exciting atmosphere; you will pass huge limestone formations and countless small islands, whose rocks rise out of the sea like tiny mountains. The Trang Islands are also known for their rich underwater world. Divers and snorkelers can observe a variety of marine life here, including colorful corals, magnificent starfish and beautiful fish.
The Best Islands in Trang
The main attractions in Trang are especially the quiet islands in the Trang archipelago and the famous Emerald Cave on Koh Mook! Here is a summary of the most beautiful places to visit in the region, which you should not miss in any case:
Koh Mook
One of the most popular destinations in Trang Province is Koh Mook, often known as Ko Muk. This island is well-known for the Emerald Cave, a cave that can only be crossed by swimming through a pitch-black tunnel. Once you reach the other end, you will be amazed by a beautiful beach, which is said to have once been a pirate hideout. A wonderful experience that you will certainly not forget that soon!
Not only the sea cave is unique, the whole island is a dream! As a part of the Chao Mai National Park, a large part of Koh Mook consists of jungle landscape and thus a lot of untouched nature awaits you. In addition, there are some great spots to go snorkeling around Koh Mook, where you can even spot clownfish and giant starfish.
Other famous attractions of Koh Mook are the breathtaking dream beaches, foremost the Sivalai Beach, which many visitors would probably count among the most stunning beaches of Trang. Especially unique is the shape of the sandy beach, where a snow-white headland extends into the sea and creates an unmistakable ambience with the palm trees in the background.
During sunset, it’s best to go to Garnet Beach, formerly also known as Charlie Beach or Had Farang. Here you will find really cozy beach bars, where you can admire insanely beautiful sunsets with a cool drink or a fresh coconut. From Garnet Beach, you have the possibility to rent a kayak and explore the beautiful coast on your own!
Where to Stay on Koh Mook:
- Dream Hotel: The Sivalai Beach Resort pampers its guests with bungalows on one of the most beautiful beaches on the island! Definitely a hotel for an exceptional stay!
- Bungalows in the jungle: The Nature Hill inspires with wonderful bungalows directly in the forest. Also the lovely Charlie Beach is only a few minutes’ walk away.
Koh Kradan
An absolute dream island, only a 15-minutes boat ride from Koh Mook, is Koh Kradan. It is definitely one of the most beautiful islands on Trang! Already when getting there, you can see the colorful coral reefs shining in the turquoise sea from afar, where a huge desire to go snorkeling is evoked right there and then. Once you arrive, there is a velvety long sandy beach like in paradise. Particularly impressive on Koh Kradan is the quiet flair. Far away from mass tourism, you can enjoy this beach jewel partly all to yourself.
Those who love snorkeling are also guaranteed to get their money’s worth on Koh Kradan because this island is famous for its colorful underwater world. Only a few steps into the sea is an impressive house reef, and so you can go snorkeling whenever you want just from the beach. With a bit of luck you will discover “Nemos” and soft corals as well as whole fish swarms.
The island also has something special to offer, especially for couples. Every year on Valentine’s Day a unique spectacle takes place on Koh Kradan. At the “Trang Underwater Wedding Ceremony“, lovers can say “I do” underwater. There is nothing more romantic than this, we can assure you!
Where to Stay on Koh Kradan:
- Bungalows on the beach: The Coral Garden Resort with a fantastic view of the turquoise sea is a wonderful accommodation for a quiet vacation on Koh Kradan.
- Bungalow resort with reef: The Mali Kradan is a beautiful, new bungalow resort directly on the beach and with its own reef! Probably one of the most amazing hotels on the island!
Koh Ngai
Koh Ngai is for many the most impressive island in Trang. Already on the approach you will just be amazed because the turquoise blue sea and the high palm trees create almost kitschy dream scenery. Arrived at the velvety soft white sandy beach, one feels as if stranded in paradise. There is not much to do on this island, but that is what makes Koh Ngai so wonderful. With a cool beer in your hand, you can enjoy the sweet idleness, hear only the sound of the sea and lose yourself in the unique scenery. Only relaxing is on your itinerary here.
If you want to be active, you can walk along the 2-kilometer-long beach lined with huge palm trees and soak up the island flair. Or you can grab your diving goggles and snorkel and discover the offshore reef, where you will spot many colorful fish.
The small resorts, almost all of which are located directly by the sea, also guarantee the best conditions for a beach vacation. Even a small inexpensive camping site with tents has settled here. Since there are no roads, stores or exciting nightlife, this island pearl is perfect for those who appreciate peace and relaxation; probably one reason why this island is so popular.
It gets really romantic on Koh Ngai during sunset, when you watch the sky turn into the most beautiful colors from your hammock or from the small beach bar.
Where to Stay on Koh Ngai:
- Cottages by the sea: The Thapwarin Resort enchants with beautiful cottages including a terrace in a great setting – what more could you want?
- Bungalows on the beach: The Mayalay Beach Resort are beautiful bungalows made of bamboo and palm leaves in super location on the most beautiful part of the beach.
Conclusion: Trang with its dreamlike island pearls is a true travel highlight. Away from mass tourism, many of the most amazing beaches in Thailand await you here.
