General Information about Wat Chedi Luang
Wat Chedi Luang, which translates as “Temple of the Royal Stupa”, is a Buddhist temple of great historical significance. This temple complex was once one of three temples on this site and is located in the heart of Chiang Mai. The history of Wat Chedi Luang dates back to the 14th century when King Saen Mueang Ma had the temple built to house the ashes of his late father. Although it took 10 years to build, the temple remained unfinished. It was only after the king’s death that his widow continued the construction, and the temple was finally completed in the mid-15th century under King Tilokaratcha. At that time, the tower of Wat Chedi Luang was an impressive 82 meters high, making it the tallest building in Lan Na at that time.
Wat Chedi Lunag is famous for the Emerald Buddha, which was first placed in the temple in 1468 and remained there for 83 years. It is a national sanctuary in Thailand. Today this precious statue is located in Wat Phra Kaeo in the Thai capital Bangkok. On the occasion of the 600th anniversary of Wat Chedi Luang a copy of the Emerald Buddha made of black jade was reinstalled in the temple in 1995. The duplicate was given the name Phra Phut Chaloem Sirirat, or Phra Yok, as the locals lovingly call it.
Things to Do at Wat Chedi Luang
There are several impressive attractions to see during a visit to the temple complex. One highlight is the Wihan Luang with the imposing golden main Buddha statue Phra Chao Attarot. The temple complex is also home to two old chedis, which are located north and south of the Wihan Luang and were restored in 1993. Another interesting feature is the impressive reclining Buddha statue made of bricks and gold leaf. The city pillar of Chiang Mai, Sao Inthakin, is also located on the temple grounds. It was brought here by King Chao Kawila in 1800 and is surrounded by three protective Yang trees. The campus of the Mahamakut Buddhist University is also located on the temple grounds.
