The Wat Phra Singh is one of the most important temples in Chiang Mai. Due to its location right in the heart of the old town, it is easy to get to on foot.

The entrance to Wat Phra Singh is free of charge. However, a small donation for the preservation of the temple is welcome. The opening hours are currently from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Visitors to the temple should wear appropriate clothing, especially covering the shoulders and knees, out of respect for religious norms and culture.

General Information about Wat Phra Singh

Wat Phra Singh, also known as the “Temple of the Lion Buddha“, is a beautiful Buddhist temple in the western part of Chiang Mai. The main entrance is guarded by stone lions and marks the end of the main road, Ratcha Damnoen Road. With its rich history, impressive Lan Na-style architecture and artistic masterpieces, the temple is an attraction not only for believers but also for many travelers. The temple was granted the status of a first-class royal temple by King Ananda Mahidol, Rama VIII, in 1935. However, the history of the temple goes back to the year 1345, when King Phayu had the temple built as a final resting place for his father. But Wat Phra Singh is most famous for the important statue of Phra Buddha Singh. This sculpture is considered one of the most important Buddha statues in northern Thailand and can be found today in Wihan Lai Kham.

On a tour of the temple grounds you can explore several interesting attractions. Especially the two major renovations of 1920 and 2002 have made it one of the highlights of the city. The most important thing to see is the Wihan Lai Kham, which was built in 1345 and since 1367 houses the famous statue of Phra Buddha Singh. This sculpture is carried in a procession through the city every year during the Songkran festival in mid-April. Nearby is the Uboso from 1806, which houses a smaller version of the Phra Buddha Sihing and a copy of the Emerald Buddha. Also of interest are the Ho Trai temple library and the Phrathatluang, the main shrine with the iconic elephant reliefs, also built in 1345.
